the quest for knowledge

this is a piece with Jamaica Kincaid in mind:

people always say "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" but I saw if the doctors cute screw the fruit; never look down unless their short; play dress up and dance like crazy; don't let anyone tell you what to do; playing sports is the thing to do; wear ankle braces when you play basketball; wear pre-wrap; have school spirit; go to football games; you only live once, make it count; always wash white with white and colors with colors; go to Australia one day and ride a kangaroo; don't wear matching socks; do something crazy; hang out with people you like; make people like you for you; don't ever change, especially for a boy; boys aren't worth tears; tell your good friends your secrets; be careful who you trust; live you life to the fullest; never give up the opportunity to go to the city; go to every part of New York City; have a dog sing like a pop-star and learn kung-foo; eat bread with butter so it will taste bland; laugh at yourself, and never take yourself seriously; always have fun no matter the circumstances; go to Africa and cure a disease; become an astronaut on earth and a doctor in space; never wear a Mets hat always Yankee's; lime green is cool and dull colors are boring; do stuff you like and never settle for less; do your homework; do bungee jumping off the side of a mountain; dress up like a Roman emperor and do the chicken dance; wear a crazy hat and sing a funny song; never listen to anything but your heart; listen to Gaelic music at least once; visit Ireland; be something your not for a day; obsess over boy bands there the way to go; listen to your elders and never say no; meet someone with your same birthday there is someone out there; go down to South America and learn the tango; go to Italy to learn that they did not invent pizza; and then you will soon discover all the pizza place's lie; get a good education; have a great career; become a olympic champion and learn ping-pong; chess is a good thing to learn; tennis is too; florida is the fountain of youth, go there when your old; basketball is a great sport and softball is too; all high schools in shows are fake, they always look too nice; ice cream is the best resort to go for depression; play in the ocean and dive off a cliff; go to a rock concert; learn to row a boat; wear sweatpants all the time, they are the best way of comfort; jeans are the easiest thing to match; pony-tails are your best friend; don't liter or global warming will rise; nikes are the coolest shoes; except for Jordan's when it comes to basketball; have you ever done something you shouldn't?; face your fears or you will live with regret.

whiparound.

dizzy soldier gone tomorrow,
a solid cast best in heaven,
a vampire love and a dream of peace,
friend at fate, brother at heart.
ending of succession terrible fail,
better forgotten at last.
sallow the positive, forget the war.
fall into promise, but gone with heroin,
unconditional love, common end.

journal entry to santa about eating disorders.

Dear Santa,

Hey Santa, as you may or may not know eating disorders are a big problem in North America.  As you may not know many people in the United States and in fact all around the world deal with eating disorders. Eating disorders can really mess up a persons body, but I think that you Santa could talk to the people dealing with the disorder and tell them how it is okay to be big and round like me. If you didn't know Santa there are many different types of eating disorders, such as anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating just to name a few. These eating disorders can really take a toll on the persons life.
To begin, eating disorders can really affect a persons life. Most eating disorders effect young girls which will really affect their life in the future. If a young girl is dealing with anorexia, it could get rid of the life long friendships she may have made or not yet. HIgh school is a very important time in a girls life, and if they are dealing with a disorder, then they will not remember it like they way should be remembering it. Santa, I think you should stop by a little bit earlier to talk to some of these girls.
In conclusion, I think you should reward girls that stopped their eating disorders. With draw is hard for any one, eating disorder, drugs, alcohol. But if you Santa, could reward them, I think maybe they could stop a little bit earlier. Even though you may be buying them to stop, it is definitely worth it. Eating disorders are such a serious thing in our day. They are becoming more and more popular and that is not good that they are. Santa, I think you should start doing something about these eating disorders.

response to texting article

Today in the New York Times, there was an article on text messaging called, "Thumbspeak" by Louis Menand. There were some things that i believe and disagree about the article. The article seems like everyone uses slang when the text, but that is not true. First hand when I text message, I just abreeviate I do not write words wrong. I think that it is laziness when people spell things wrong. They can take the extra secong to write out the whole word. I ean it is not that hard. For me, I set my cell phone on word so I always use the full word. Also the other thing about my cell phone is that i have a two -sided phone. I have both numeric key pad and a full board key pad. Even when i use the full key board, I try my best to write out the whole word. Sometimes I may forget to write it all because I am in a rush. Overall texting has really influenced our generation.
First off, I think our generation depends on your cell phones too much. My mom is always telling me that I am too attached to my phone and she thinks everything i do with it is stupid. That is the difference between our generation and hers. To us, texting is an easier way to connect with friends and family. On the other hand, texting can get really annoying. Especially when i have to tell someone something long and I have to text it to them, it gets so annoying and hurts my thumbs sometimes. It may sounds ridiculous, but I think texting can be taken as an extreme sometimes. The other side of texting is that if you just have to say something to a lot of people, it is easier to send one massive text them call each one of them. Also when someone needs to tell you something quick like a time change in something or if something was cancelled, it is just easier to text and and you do not have to respond, but with a phone call it just take too much time. I think that text messages are both over used and they are helpful.
As you can see text messaging is what you make it. It can be helpful and useful. Text messaging is good when you are away for the weekend or went on a vacation and theres a party your friend is at and want to know what is going on, you can text your friend asking how it is. I do not thing your friend is going to anwer her cell phone at a party, she is most likely to answer a text message. Also people over use text messaging by texting in schools and for the stupidest reasons. I do not see why a person has to text you first thing in the morning to say "hey" when you would be seeing them at school. In conclusion text messages are good to have but they should not be over used and not make our generation so attached to them.
